A cartoon explanation of why we need a public health insurance option. Now that the health care bill has passed, my friend Andy Lubershane (the animator) has made another video about a topic near and dear to my heart: Climate and Energy. Please check it out here: www.youtube.com Animated by Andy Lubershane. More comics at www.earthlycomics.blogspot.com Note The data in this cartoon is supported by this report: www.ourfuture.org which includes a lot more detail on current proposals for a public option.

Look @ fema distribute water at katrina- thats ur centralized govt doing shit for you. It was so successful that like no one got water
Look @ ussr socializing grain distribution- that was sooo successful that most people never got any grain!
When you centralize power & make it unaccountable, when you take power away from the people where it rightfully belongs & put it in some foreign govt entity’s hands, u can expect TYRANNY especially when there is no accountability!
Education- nationalized & downgraded!
Social security- nationalized & forced–> huge fraud. The socialized healthcare has been done in EU- result?
Longer wait lines for EVERYTHING!
Lower health quality
RATIONING!
Forced medicine- the government dictates exactly what medicine you get if any
Cops-fine, Firefighters-Fine, Socialist healthcare workers-not fine.
we need consumer-run healthcare.
no healh insurance? krankenschutz24
Health Insurance from Germany for US-citizen for US$50/month
Canadian healthcare failing.,overcrowded and failing socialized medical system in their country they have set up private membership clinics where, for $2,000 a year, patients can access well staffed and equipped clinics and avoid the long waits and compromised care of the public system.
@Inflectum We don’t NEED firefighters?? Without training, none of us have the skill or equipment to fight a modern day house fire. God hopes your house doesn’t catch fire, I’m sure you’d be the first whining for help. We don’t need police?? THe fact you actually think that is mind boggling. You can treat your own wounds with proper training?? Not even doctors treat themselves. And who said you need a farm to grow veggies? Small garden, and gun for wild game, and you are good to go.
@MadHabber93
Indeed. You can also treat your own wounds, provided you have the experience, skills and equipment needed to do so. Just like with food. We could dump you in the middle of a farm and let you grow your own food, but good luck surviving without any practical knowledge on how to do so. Similarly, we could put out our own fires, treat our own waste and protect ourselves from criminals if we had our own equipment, skills and experience in those matters. We don’t NEED any services.
@Inflectum But we don’t NEED General Mills to survive. We can grow our own food. Bad analogy.
Yeah, the government should cover all essential services, because….. well, just because, okay!?! We need government run, socialized, whatever you want to call it FOOD PRODUCTION! It is essential, and evil companies like General Mills take PROFITS out of our FOOD which we NEED to survive!!!!
I’m sorry, that argument is crap. I’d like to chose who provides for my essential needs, thank you very much. And for 2-3% administrative costs, Medicare sure is awfully bankrupt.
@daveme7 well yea it wouldn’t be profitable to them or you because within 2 years you’d pay more for insurance then the insurance value of the trailer. Its like getting a health insurance specifically for the common cold.
single payer is good for passing on your medical bills to suckers down the line.
works good if you are the type that runs up big medical bills.
well europe has this, and its pretty crappy, not to mention the health bill was for health insurence companys anyway, and with so meny burucrats in england running this thing its ipossible to get rid of it, there are more goverment officials then docters in the field!!!!!!! its wrong!
at 2:36, ya, medicare is a perfect example of government run healthcare, do i really have to explain it, heres it short
Medicare is BANKRUPT but not technically government really cant go bankrupt until someone wants to collect, china, UK, Saudi Arabia, Middle East, Japan, South America
so the money will come from you and me forcibly by the government you think can run it
government is inherently the same around the world always looking for power over its people dont hand over ur health to them
@kubaniski Exactly my point which obviously you can say it much better than me( live in 45 yr old trailers stuck together out in the country and not many companies will touch this place for insurance)
@Aegius And thats the problem in “reading” about a thing rather than living the experience.
@davijeph I have been reading about the NHS. Long lines. Waits for months or even years. Costs skyrocketing. Dentists fed up so they are leaving in droves and setting up private practices. Scandals in hospitals. Shortages galore. Worse rates of cancer and heart disease survival. Your NHS is a disaster.
Costs go through the roof w/gov running them as gov doesn’t care via passing costs to taxpayers and w/o concern for keeping it down. End run: bankruptcy as in Greece, California & MA.
Did anyone ever hear the quote that, “The trouble with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.” And yes I know the US passed the Healthcare reform bill (Universal healthcare reform) and people will tell me to stop complaining and get over it. But the thing is in this country the US a majority did not want it the way it was. So it will hopefully be altered after the november elections. Also look at the tax rates for countries with this kind of healthcare, pretty high.
Sorry I was being a little sarcastic I don’t have a “company” in the sense you mean.I have my own private home and contents insurance true but “fire insurance”, as in paying for a private fire service? Please tell me you are kidding. I like all UK citizens pay for professional run service out of tax like our tax based NHS it works. In the US you pay less in general taxation but pay out far more than we do covering things like health care and it seems fire insurance. Regards
@davijeph you said “not if your in it at the time” which im guessing was about fire insurance, and i don’t know about you but my home insurance covers all fires so long as i did not burn the house down intentionally. But otherwise they cover me.
@kubaniski Explain please?
@davijeph what? which company are you with?
On Medicare and social security-in about 2080, these two programs will be 84% of the budget where today it is about 13%. This will see a liability(what we would have to borrow to pay this over 100 trillion dollars in 2080. All this talk of profit when most see taxing 37% just to pay these programs in 2080. Perhaps the inefficiency of governemnt in this area is because they dxo not pay enough for administration
@daveme7 Not if you are in it at the time.
I always thought house insurance would cover you for a fire destroying your house. The federal government does not run the volunteer fire company and does not manage health insurance-this is a state function based on state laws and in all of this, the government stick it to the states in this health care plan. So when my state controls healthcare-less money for infastructure and decent schools who also run our public schools.
